Role Overview
We're a small, gaming start up in Finalnd, looking for an experienced server engineer to own the backend infrastructure and live service systems for our upcoming mobile adventure game, built in Unreal Engine.
As the first and only server engineer on the project, you will fully own the backend strategy. You will be the one we count on to make our game work as a live product - from player data and progression to social features, LiveOps, and analytics. You will ensure our systems are scalable, performant, and ready for live service.
This is a rare opportunity to join at the early stage of an ambitious project - supported by Supercell - and contribute to both the technical foundation and supporting the creative process of how we build games.
Key Responsibilities
Architect our backend infrastructure and directly own implementation. This could mean integrating services where they make sense, building custom solutions where they don't, or a hybrid approach.
Design and implement backend infrastructure and server logic for player progression, persistence, economy, social features with appropriate validation, and live service needs.
Implement LiveOps infrastructure such as events, remote config, content updates without client deploys.
Set up analytics pipelines and event tracking.
Support DevOps, CI/CD, and build pipelines as needed.
Collaborate with client engineers, artists, and designers on systems that span client and server.
Who We Are Looking For
6+ years in game development with significant backend or live service experience.
Shipped at least one live service game (mobile preferred.)
Strong understanding of client-server architecture for games.
Experience with cloud infrastructure, databases, and backend services - whether building custom solutions or integrating Unreal-compatible services like PlayFab, Firebase, or AWS.
Proficiency in backend-relevant languages (C++, C#, Python, etc.)
Ability to work independently and make architectural decisions with confidence.
Good judgment about trade-offs between building custom solutions, vs. integrating services, etc.
Strong communicator who can collaborate across disciplines in a small team.
Comfortable with ambiguity and proactive about finding solutions.
Familiarity with server-side optimization and cross-platform experience.
Familiarity with building LiveOps tooling or internal admin systems.
Nice to Have
Unreal Engine-based project development experience.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools (ex: Claude Code)
Familiarity with generative AI APIs or ML frameworks.
Prior experience integrating AI into gameplay systems.
What We Offer
Ownership and autonomy in your work, within a collaborative team environment.
Remote-first setup with flexible hours and async-friendly communication.
A high-impact role at an early stage, backed by Supercell.
Direct influence on both the game and how we build it.
Location:
Finland or Canada only. All of our team members work remote regardless of their location.
